Last Tyke Update...
Hi all, this will be the last of the Tyke Breneman Blog updates...with lots of pictures. First the birthing details:
Weight 7 lbs 11.2 oz, Length 18.5 inches, Born June 19th (Father's Day) 8:38 PM
Jessica was a real trooper. As seen in an earlier post below, her water broke at 3:55 AM and we immediately got ready and went to the hospital. Jessica let the water drain a bit and I showered and got the last things put together...like mail to be put in the mail box and some videos we had rented. On the way to the hospital we returned the videos and dropped off the mail. We ended up in the "triage" room at our hospital right around 5:00 AM.
Jessica was admitted, asked a few questions and hooked up to an external fetal monitor and set up with an IV to keep her hydrated. After an hour or so Jess' parents both showed up to give their support. Let me just say up front that they were absolutely amazing and awesome to have around. Mom chatted up a storm and kept Jess' mind off the labor pains and both of them gave great support through some of the rougher moments.
Time just passed along and we ended up going for a walk around the floor for about an hour. When we got back Jess' pains were getting pretty severe. One of the doctors we had been seeing during the pregnancy was actually on duty and just came in after our walk. Jess asked to be checked how far along she was, because she didn't want to get an epidural too early (less than 4 cm) or too late (where it wouldn't be effective). Well, the walk worked wonders as she was right at 4-4.5 cm dialated and that would be perfect to get the epidural started. This was about 9 AM. The anesthesiologist showed up and the three of us waited outside for nearly an hour. Jess had 3 or 4 major pains before the epidural was to be administered...she had a few more during the procedure. By the time we were called back into the room the pains were under control and all was good to go and the labor just continued to progress.
Right around 4PM Jess measured in at 9.5 cm and was about ready to go into an LDR (Labor, Deliver and Recovery) room. I figured it would be about 1-3 hours of pushing, and I posted that on the blog from my cell phone. However, the LDR wasn't available and they weren't ready for us until about 5:45 PM, which is when we checked into the room (it is a 50 foot push down the hall). We got situated, got cameras ready and started pushing. After about 3 or 4 sets of pushing we were told to wait another half an hour. About 45 minutes or so later the nurses and midwives came back and we got started again. The contractions started to subside and get further apart. Pitocin was introduced into her IV and the contractions got closer together and we moved into various positions and pushed pushed pushed...
Finally, at about 8:38 Summer finally got all the way out. Yay! Summer was placed on Jess' chest for about 5 minutes to say hello, she was washed off a little bit and I got to cut her umbilical cord. She was then taken away for a few miutes to be better cleaned, have a diaper put on and be checked out. Her APGAR (Activity - Pulse - Grimace (Reflex Irritability) - Appearance (Skin Color) - Respiration) score was 9.5 or 9.9. I heard 9.9 and Jess heard 9.5...either way, Summer was super happy and ready to face the world! Her eyes were open and very alert. Here she is in the bassinet first thing:
Shortly after she was cleaned up and warmed up (see the heart on her chest? That is a thermocouple to make sure her skin temperature is where it should be before heading back out to mommy) she was brought back out to Jessica.
Everything was cleaned up, the room quickly went from crowded (with all the nurses) to nearly empty...just Jess, me, Summer and mom and dad. They congratulated us, wished us the best and went on their way, so we could more quickly get to feeding Summer. On their way out they sent in Gabe and Krissy. They came in for about 10 minutes to say hello to their new niece and take some more pictures, of course. After they had left we proceeded to attempt a feeding.
We finally ended up in our hospital room around 10 PM. Summer wouldn't let us sleep a wink for the first 13 hours of her life. She was a very curious girl. In addition a lot of hospital staff stop by for various things. I can't even remember the play-by-play on who came in when. All I remember is Jessica recovering from the epidural and lack of food for over 24 hours. I took care of Summer as much as possible while Jess recovered. Our first chance at sleep was near 9 AM (June 20th), after most morning rounds and breakfast was served. Summer was in and out of the bassinet in the room during this time:
I luckily got 30 minutes or so of sleep around 10 AM. Also during this time frame we used up all our cell phone minutes we're sure...with calling all of the various people. (If you have Verizon Wireless, feel free to call our cells, otherwise please call our home line. :-D )
This first day we were visited by Elena, Erika and Tim, and Jess' parents. Elena brought some ballons and some flowers from my sister, Ginger, and her family. Erika and Tim came and also brought some roses. Mom and Dad came last and had a rough time with Summer having three diaper changes in a matter of 30 minutes....quite crazy. Grandma, I should now say (or abuela ;-D ), didn't get her chance to hold Summer, so hopefully she'll be able to stop by tomorrow. Summer was very figity right about then...Here are the flowers we received:
We also received some banana nut bread HOT AND FRESH from Gabe and Krissy, the night of the birth. We basically finished the whole thing before leaving today, as it was the best thing available...much better than the hospital food!
When I would change Summer before/during/after her feedings I'd have Jessica hold Summer's hand in the bassinet like this:
Later, when all things were more calm we held Summer most of the time. Here is Jessica with Summer some more, taken earlier today:
So, that's about it for this blog, Summer is born! YAY!! She has just walked into our lives:
